Considering Abortion?

Make an informed decision

Finding yourself pregnant when you were not expecting it can be incredibly scary and overwhelming. You may be in shock and wondering how you could possibly deal with this on top of everything else going on in your life right now.

Towson Women’s Care specializes in assisting women during this very stressful time in their lives. Since 1982, we have been listening to and supporting women as they make a decision that will impact the rest of their lives.

We understand that time is of the essence, so before making any decision, take a deep breath and read through some basic information on your options.

How do I know if I am really pregnant?

If you have missed a period or are experiencing early pregnancy symptoms, it is a good idea to take a pregnancy test. We offer FREE testing as well as ultrasounds that determine if your pregnancy is viable –  an important thing to determine before any procedure can take place.

How can I be sure abortion is the right choice for me?

Every woman’s situation is different. Maybe you are still in school. Maybe you just had a baby and can’t imagine having another child so close in age. Perhaps you work and take care of other children at home. Or maybe you were never planning on being a parent. Becoming pregnant when you were not expecting it brings much uncertainty and stress and so many questions come to mind. Our client advocates are here to listen to your concerns, answer questions and give you the support you need while taking into consideration your unique circumstances.

What’s the difference between the abortion pill and a surgical abortion?

There are two basic types of abortion procedures; the abortion pill, often called “medical abortion” and the surgical abortion. The abortion pill is available to women who are up to 11 weeks pregnant. The first pill is taken in the abortion clinic and then you will experience your abortion at home. You can expect cramping and bleeding for 6-19 days, or even up to 30 days, which works to expel the embryo. You can read more about the abortion pill here

A surgical abortion is usually performed after 11 weeks of pregnancy. There are two types of surgical abortions; an aspiration abortion using a vacuum or a dilation and evacuation abortion (D & E), using a vacuum and a metal loop shaped tool called a curette. Both take place in a clinic and require time for observation afterwards and recuperation at home.

What steps can I take to help me make a decision?

It is always helpful to make a checklist before making a decision. Writing down the pros and cons can help clear up some confusion while you weigh your options, especially because you may feel rushed. Reading about the procedures and risks involved will also help you decide. And, talking with our counselors to sort everything out can really help.

The next step is to take a pregnancy test. A positive test is necessary before undergoing any procedure. Call us or Text us today to schedule your appointment.

If your pregnancy test is positive, you can receive an ultrasound to determine if your pregnancy is viable (has a heartbeat) and is in the uterus, and to determine the gestational age of the baby. This is an important factor in making your decision. Having all this knowledge will empower you to make the right choice.

If you are considering abortion, we offer FREE pregnancy tests and ultrasounds and provide confidential counseling to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Questions & Answers

While abortion is legal, each state has limitations on when you can have an elective abortion. In Maryland, you may elect to have an abortion up to 24-28 weeks in your pregnancy. Our ultrasound technician can give you a FREE ultrasound to determine gestational age before any decision needs to be made.

It is recommended that you confirm your pregnancy before you undergo any medical procedure.

An ultrasound can determine whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus or outside the uterus, such as in one of the fallopian tubes (also known as an ectopic pregnancy) and can determine if the pregnancy is viable (living).

If you are under the age of 18, you may come to our clinic without a parent. We follow all privacy regulations as outlined in HIPAA. We do recommend that you choose a trusted companion to wait for you to support you after your appointment.

If you aren’t ready to be a parent at this time, domestic adoption could be an option for you. Adoption in the U.S. looks much different than it did years ago. Birth mothers can opt to remain in the life of their child and can work out the limits of that relationship with the adoptive parents. At Towson Women’s Care, we can discuss this option with you and can connect you with an adoption agency for a non-committal information session to learn more.

Although parenting is a huge responsibility with a long-term commitment, it is very rewarding. You may be wondering what it would be like to have a child. Can you still work or finish school? What about childcare? Can I afford it? Am I ready? Our experienced client advocates can walk you through this option and provide you with resources and parenting education, as well as material support.
