Abortion Procedures

What are the types of abortion available in Baltimore?

Abortion Pill (Mifeprex, RU-486, At-home Abortion)

The abortion pill, Mifeprex1, is the most common medication abortion procedure in the US, which uses pills to end a pregnancy. The FDA has approved this procedure for women up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. The abortion pill is also known as RU-486, chemical abortion, medication abortion, at-home abortion, telemed abortion or Mifepristone – but they are all referring to the same method of an early abortion. Before taking this medication, read the facts, know the risks and side effects and especially review the warnings given by the FDA below.

Abortion Pill Procedure

The Medication Abortion is a process. Here is what you might expect to experience.

  1. An assessment will be performed at an abortion clinic, and then patients will be given the first pill at the clinic. This first pill blocks the production of progesterone2, a hormone necessary to support a pregnancy. This works to cut off the lifeline to the baby.
  2. Next, patients get their second dose of a different medication (Misoprostol2) to take at home two days later. You can expect cramping and bleeding for 6-19 days, or even up to 30 days in this phase, which works to expel the embryo.
  3. Finally, if the medication abortion fails, a surgical abortion will be necessary. You must return to the abortion provider within a week to 14 days to assess whether or not the medication abortion procedure worked and if you will need to have a surgical abortion.

Abortion Pill Side Effects

Side effects include weakness, headache, fever/chills, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness for up to 3 days1.

Serious side effects include excessive bleeding, pelvic infection and failure to terminate the pregnancy3.

If the medical abortion fails to terminate the pregnancy, your doctor may perform an ultrasound to determine if you require a surgical abortion2.

FDA Warnings

The FDA strongly warns women NOT to buy mifeprex over the internet because there currently are no safeguards and they do not approve this drug coming from other countries. You must only accept this drug from an approved physician and continue to follow up with the physician to confirm that the pregnancy is expelled.

The FDA1 also warns that women with an ectopic pregnancy (implantation in the fallopian tubes) or women who have an IUD in place should not take this drug. Women taking blood thinners or those who have medical conditions such as seizure disorders, bleeding disorders, or certain heart, liver, kidney or lung diseases are not candidates for the abortion pill.

Abortion Pill Reversal

If you are having second thoughts about taking the first dose, Mifeprex, it is not too late. Call the Abortion Pill reversal hotline below within 72 hours of taking Mifeprex in order to deliver a healthy baby.

It may not be too late. Call the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline at (877) 558-0333, or visit Abortion Pill Reversal website.

Frequently Asked Questions

While every woman’s reaction to pain is different, a medication abortion can be experienced as more painful than menstrual cramps, but less painful than childbirth. In addition, a medication abortion may feel less painful than a surgical abortion, however, women experience pain for a longer period of time because of the nature of the abortion pill process.5

The first oral medication will block the production of the hormone progesterone, which cuts off the lifeline to the fetus. The second oral medication will cause cramping and bleeding, and finally the expulsion of the fetus.

Women can experience a few or all of the following symptoms when undergoing an at-home abortion, otherwise known as the abortion pill. Here are some of the side effects of this procedure6:

  • bleeding, sometimes severe
  • blood clots, some very large
  • mild to severe cramping
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • upset stomach
  • breast tenderness
  • vomiting
  • chills
  • low-grade fever
  • diarrhea
  • fatigue

A medication abortion may last from 3 days to 2 weeks.

The FDA strongly warns women NOT to buy mifeprex over the internet because there currently are no safeguards and they do not approve this drug coming from other countries. You must only accept this drug from an approved physician and continue to follow up with the physician to confirm that the fetus is expelled.

If you are under 10 weeks along in pregnancy, you would be eligible for a medication abortion. Serious complications could occur if you take this oral medication after 10 weeks. At Towson Women’s Care, we offer FREE pregnancy tests and ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy, verify that you have an intrauterine pregnancy (if ectopic, taking the abortion pill would be dangerous), and determine how far along you are.
